Binscombe Walking Group

Walking for Health is back! The first walk in over a year will be on Tuesday 1st June with all the timings and details exactly the same as before the pandemic caused the walks to pause.

Working with the excellent charity Walking for Health (which is supported by the Ramblers), we set up a regular walking group based at the practice in 2017. After a year's pause due to the pandemic, we are delighted that the walks are able to start once more from the beginning of June. Here are the details of the walks:

When:

  • The walks started in March 2017, and take place every Tuesday whatever the weather!

  • Meet at 10.15 for a 10.30 start to the walk itself. Please arrive early the first time you come for a walk, so that we can register you.

Where:

About the walks:

  • The walks will last approximately 30 minutes and are for all ability of walker.

  • Dr Karen Jones will head up a group of volunteers who will help make sure that everyone is able to enjoy the walk and no-one gets left behind.

  • There will be plenty of places to stop and have a rest for those that would like breaks on the way.

  • Well-behaved dogs are very welcome – but please keep them on a lead during the walk.

  • The walks will be mostly flat and on tarmac paths but we are hoping to organise longer walks in the future which may involve muddy areas, please wear sensible shoes and clothing.

  • The walk will still take place in bad weather!

  • Everyone is welcome, whether you are used to walking or not – and you don’t have to be a patient at the practice in order to join in.

  • There is no charge for the walks.

Some administrative details:

  • We are very grateful for the support of the charity Walking for Health in helping us to set up the walks. They have provided training for volunteers, promotional material and great advice. By working with them we are also able to link in with other walks in the local area, and to be covered by their indemnity insurance.

  • We do need all participants to complete the Walking for Health registration form. There will be copies of the form available on the day, but it can be downloaded here, and if you are able to print it off and bring the completed form with you, this will help to speed up the registration process. Thank you.

We look forward to seeing you and to enjoying some great walks together!

If you would like to be a volunteer, or receive e mails about any changes or developments to the walks, please keep readying!

As a practice we are very enthusiastic about the value of regular exercise in helping people to stay well, improve their health if they have been unwell and just generally feel good. We would like the group to be run by a team comprising members of staff from the practice and enthusiastic local volunteers who would like to help people get walking.

We are looking for volunteers who might be able to support this exciting new venture. This will involve a short period of training and then being part of a team supporting the walks themselves. If you would like to hear more, then please contact us at the practice.
