Should I have a PSA test?

There has been a lot in the news about the PSA test as a screening tool to detect early prostate cancer, but there are real controversies about the test, and whether or not it is a good idea to look for prostate cancer in men who have no symptoms. The main problem is that looking for prostate cancer can result in finding a 'cancer' that would sit quietly in the prostate gland for many years and never cause any problems. Many men are asking about the test, and a really good place to start is this blog, written by Cancer Research UK. If you want to know more about the test then do have a read of this, or speak to one of our GPs about it. We are happy to arrange PSA tests in men who want to have the test, but because it could be something you regret doing, we feel it is very important to have a full discussion about the risks and benefits of this blood test before signing up for it.
